Not Finding
Searching not finding. Give up, or persist?
We consult motivation, which doesn’t like
our interest, prefers anonymity.
Organic memory fades with age
though only as recall. We keep but can’t
access our turgid past. So say experts
we sometimes believe. Belief is finding
persistent not-finding, say witches
of disbelief, which appears as abandonment
of searching justified. It isn’t there
even artificially in distant data centers
gorged on power, water, credibility.
Evolving is devolving like finding
not-finding, say the witches, defining.
There’s a flip-side, we insist, immodest
though a move of such abundance can hardly
be a flip. The belief not-finding finds
carries us outside what we thought finding was,
to being found. We are millions of years
of growth in complexity, some exponential
that six brutal extinctions have not stopped.
We are witness not single-eyed
but multiple, numerable but unnumbered.
Reported storm surges ride Texas beaches,
wildfires burn unwitnessed in roadless
Canadian forests. We aspire, dream.
We are scene, senses, briefly present mind,
an unwatched universe surrounding time.
